Love & Hip Hop: Couples that Defy Stereotypes

In today’s pop culture, with television shows like Love & Hip Hop and Love & Basketball, there is a notion that celebrity relationships (and especially relationships within hip hop) are simply made to fall apart. They are toxic. They reek with betrayal and cheating scandals. People couple up simply to promote one another. The list goes on and on.

Among the problematic couples, though, are some worth celebrating. They are relationships built upon trust, commitment, and mutual respect. To show that these values still exist within modern relationships, we present a few couples that we greatly admire within the hip hop community.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Undoubtedly the hottest and most powerful couple of the last decade, Jay-Z and Beyoncé sure make a great match. They both are hard-working individuals who each made a name for themselves in the music industry while keeping their sizzling romance quiet in the beginning. Beyoncé is a self-proclaimed feminist, inspiring young women everywhere to forge their own path without relying on men. Jay-Z is happy to let his wife achieve greatness while he focuses on his own endeavors. When not making hit records or investing in business ventures, the two can be found spending time with their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

Model Chrissy Teigen became the envy of women everywhere when musician John Legend released a beautiful song dedicated to her. While “All of Me” became an international hit, earning a host of certifications and awards, this couple remains as real as ever. They’re not afraid to show their silly side to the world through cute Instragram photos, and they’re unapologetic about how happy they are together. In theory, they might appear a mismatch with John’s reserved personality and Chrissy’s talkative ways, but it’s clear that these two simply bring out the best in each other.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz

Although Swizz Beatz had been married with children before, it’s hard to deny the love he now shares with soulful singer, Alicia Keys. “It’s very natural and kind of unfolds,” she said on Oprah’s Master Class a few years ago. “And it happens to you.” Alicia herself is not one to shun her husband’s past. In fact, she sets a positive example by happily embracing his ex-wife and her stepchildren as her own family, saying that it allows the children to have multiple adult figures to look up to.

Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West

They may be the subject of satire and butt of jokes here and there, but we simply can’t imagine a better match for Kim and Kanye than each other. Kanye was already friends with the Kardashian household before they started dating. This pair is made up of two people who are both ambitious and influential, albeit provocative at times. Because of that, they understand one another like no one else can. Chrissy Teigen even revealed after a “date night” with Kimye that those two “are just the happiest couple I’ve ever seen–so loving and affectionate.” It’s no wonder they are still married with an adorable daughter and a newborn son on the way.
